Manley Jaquiss’s Bulls spirit is contagious
Manley Jaquiss is one of USF’s most actively involved alums. In a sense, Jaquiss never really left USF since the first time he stepped onto the Tampa campus 40 years ago. He attends almost all the football games and alumni events with his wife and daughter, who are also USF alumnae.

USF researchers use 3D technology to explore an ancient Greek city in Sicily
Thanks to the interdisciplinary work of a team of USF scientists, the ancient Greek city of Heloros, in Sicily, is now being studied with the most advanced digital technologies. The team identified additional structural details of the city, which dates to the eighth century B.C., and is now able to reveal a fuller picture of its layout.

Amber Jankowski's unexpected journey from military service to mentorship at USF
USF alum Amber Jankowski was the military equivalent of a dental hygienist in the Air Force before four hand surgeries changed her career path forever. After being medically discharged, Jankowski turned to serve those who faced similar challenges as she did and became a vocational rehabilitation counselor. In her position, she helps individuals with disabilities find something they are successful at and works to normalize the wide variety of skills people can have.

Pyper Vaughn continues her family's nursing legacy
Pyper Vaughn made USF her home to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse, a profession that has been part of her family for generations. She is now a senior, a pathway program that leads to on track to graduate in 2023. Her goal is to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist and work with helicopter teams to perform what she calls, “little surgeries in the sky.”

New brain-painting method developed at USF being tested for ADHD treatment
USF computer scientist Marvin Andujar is harnessing the power of concentration and art to develop a new brain-computer interface (BCI) prototype and help study participants use their brain like never before. The goal is to introduce a novel treatment option for individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) by tapping directly into their brain activity.

Ryan Shargo is cultivating dreams of medicine at USF
Ryan Shargo has taken advantage of many opportunities at USF. As an incoming freshman, he started his academic journey through the summer Academic and Cultural Engagement Program, in which he traveled to Costa Rica. Shargo later travelled to the Dominican Republic thanks to his Genshaft Global Presidential Scholarship.

Physicians, anthropologists and marine biologists start at the soil in launch of program to address nature’s impact on human health
Linking human health to the environment, a growing team of scientists is working together to enhance the impact of microbiomes in a new multifaceted venture called the USF Metropolitan Food Project (MFP). The goal of the project is to address how environmental changes impact food nutrition, and in turn, human health and the risk of viral pandemics.

A momentous year
President Steve Currall joined the University of South Florida on July 1, 2019. He has successfully consolidated USF’s three campuses, raised over $115 million and continues to lead through the complexities resulting from COVID-19, making Currall’s first year in office one of the most eventful time periods since USF was established in 1956.

USF medical students create new ways to reach patients
When COVID-19 restrictions kept USF medical students from all direct contact with patients, many refused to stay away completely. Instead, they used online tools to build new services and resources to reaffirm their commitment to the field. From making calls to check on patients, to creating multilingual resource guides for underserved communities, to creating online cooking clubs or even assisting health care workers with their own personal duties, students found ways to do what they most love – to help others.

USF psychologists report uptick in online disinhibition
Social distancing has moved almost all in-person interactions online, which may be leading to more productive therapy sessions. USF psychologists are noticing more instances of online disinhibition. The behavior is similar to when you share a car ride and speak more freely since you’re not looking at anyone face-to-face.
